Why do we flush our hydrants?
Hydrant flushing enhances water quality by flushing sediment from the water main pipes. 

What should I do while the hydrant is being flushed?
If you see a hydrant being flushed on your street, avoid running water and using the washing machine or the dishwasher until the flushing is complete. Sediment can be stirred up during the process, causing small particles to be present in your water. If you see hydrant flushing crews working in the area, please drive carefully.

Why is my water discolored after flushing?
When a hydrant is opened it stirs up iron and other minerals in the water mains, which can cause discoloration and fine sediment particles to appear. There is no health hazard associated with discolored water. The discoloration may take a few hours to fully dissipate. To verify the water is clear, run cold water through a tap in your home for a few minutes.

Shut the water off and wait several minutes if you encounter discolored water. DON'T wash laundry and/or run your dishwasher until the water runs clear.
Use a faucet with unsoftened water to check water quality. Often this is the basement sink, cold kitchen faucet, or outdoor hose. DON'T run discolored water through a faucet with a filter, like a refrigerator water dispenser or ice maker, as the sediment may clog the filter.
