K9 Handler Juan Hinojos & K9 Chico
K9 Chico is the newest member of the Fitchburg Police Department K9 Unit. Born in France on October 1, 2022, Chico is a Belgian Malinois partnered with Officer Hinojos. The duo joined the department in June 2025 and has undergone extensive training to become a dependable and effective team. Chico is highly skilled in detecting illegal drugs, locating evidence, tracking individuals, and providing protection for both citizens and fellow officers.
What makes Chico especially unique is his ability to understand commands in three languages—English, Dutch, and French. His intelligence, adaptability, and strong drive make him an invaluable partner in the field and a trusted protector for our community.
K9 Chico’s service is made possible through the generous support of the community. Their contributions ensure that Chico and Officer Hinojos have the tools and training needed to serve Fitchburg with dedication and professionalism.
Veterinary care for Chico is graciously provided by the team at Fitchburg Veterinary Hospital and boarding and grooming services are provided by Waggin' Tails Doggie Dude Ranch in Fitchburg. Welcome K9 Chico!

K9 Drago Enters Retirement
After years of loyal service to the Fitchburg Police Department, K9 Drago honorably concluded his career at Community Night Out on August 13, 2025. Throughout his time with the department, Drago proved himself to be a courageous and dedicated partner, assisting in countless operations that helped keep our community safe.
Together, Officer Parker and K9 Drago were recognized with three awards from the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Canine Handler’s Association: Rookie Handler of the Year, Meritorious Narcotics Find of the Year, and Meritorious Apprehension of the Year. These honors reflect not only Drago’s remarkable skill and drive but also the strong bond and teamwork he shared with his handler.
Following his retirement, Drago was purchased by Sergeant Parker, ensuring that he will enjoy his next chapter surrounded by the same love and care that defined his years of service. As Drago transitions from active duty, we celebrate his many accomplishments and the lasting impact he made on his handler, fellow officers, and the community he served.
K9 Chase - In Memoriam
On January 15, 2016, K9 Chase retired from active duty after nearly eight years of service to the City of Fitchburg Police Department. Chase passed away March 5, 2017.Over the course of his career, K9 Chase was responsible for numerous seizures of narcotics and firearms and also assisted in locating lost citizens and wanted suspects. Often, his mere presence ensured officers were kept safe and helped de-escalate dangerous situations. Most importantly though, Chase served as an unofficial ambassador for the department, bringing smiles to those young and old.
Chase will always be remembered for his devotion to his partner, Officer Lopez, the police department and the City of Fitchburg.
